Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Rabindra Ghosh, a 75-year-old senior lawyer from Bangladesh, has chosen to remain in India despite concerns raised by his family regarding his safety. His son, Rahul, has been urging him to stay in India due to the escalating security threats in Bangladesh, especially after extremist groups in Chittagong targeted his father. Ghosh, however, has firmly decided to continue his legal fight for Hindu monk Chinmoy Prabhu, who is associated with the United Sanatan Jagran Front and facing legal battles in Bangladesh.
Rahul, who resides in Barrackpore, North 24 Parganas, has emphasized the risks his father faces in Bangladesh, especially in Dhaka, where Ghosh’s residence lacks adequate security. While Ghosh has had police protection in Chittagong, his son has expressed deep concerns about his safety in the capital, where the law enforcement presence is weaker. "I want my father to stay in India for now, and only return once the situation stabilizes," said Rahul, underscoring the risks associated with Ghosh’s continued presence in Bangladesh under these conditions.
Despite these concerns, Ghosh has decided to return to Bangladesh before the year’s end. He came to India for medical treatment and has planned to return to his home country by the beginning of the new year. Ghosh has communicated with his colleagues in Bangladesh, assuring them that his departure from India is temporary and that his legal work, particularly regarding Chinmoy Prabhu’s case, will continue after his return.
Ghosh has also faced pressure from his daughter, who suggested that he and his wife move to Canada for their safety. However, Ghosh has firmly rejected this proposal, emphasizing his commitment to his homeland and his legal responsibilities. He stated, “Why should I leave my motherland and the people who need help?” Ghosh is determined to remain in the country and continue his advocacy, as he believes his cause is deeply tied to the welfare of the oppressed people in Bangladesh.
To further his efforts, Ghosh plans to file a petition in the High Court to move Prabhu’s case from Chittagong to Dhaka, arguing that a court in the capital would be better equipped to handle the case. However, given his advanced age and the difficulties of traveling between cities, Ghosh faces logistical challenges in pursuing this course of action. Nevertheless, he remains committed to his legal battle, emphasizing his resolve to continue fighting for justice despite the personal and security-related obstacles he faces.
